Below are a few general troubleshooting tips you can try. These
tips will not be very effective against problems related to spyware.
They may help with general windows issues, errors, and general poor
performance of computer (system running very slowly).
Restart
your computer.
It's
amazing how many onsite service calls are fixed by simply restarting the
computer. Many people (myself included) leave their computer
running 24/7. Eventually, something will get messed up in the
system and the computer will start behaving very strangely. The
first thing you should always try is closing all applications and
restarting the computer.
Verify
your antivirus is working and run a system virus scan.
If
restarting your computer didn't fix the problem, try running a virus
check. Remember, you should see the antivirus software (Norton, Macafee, etc) icon in the taskbar on the lower right side of your screen
(by the clock). If it is missing, you may have a virus that actually
disabled your antivirus program. You will need to start the
antivirus program and get any virus definition updates before running
the scan. A scan with out-of-date virus definitions is absolutely
worthless. Once you have verified your virus definitions are current,
then run a scan. See if it completes, and if it found viruses and was
able to delete the virus and repair all files. If the scan could
not complete, then most likely your antivirus software has been corrupted
(probably from a virus) and will need to be reinstalled.
Stop and
think for a minute about any programs or hardware you recently
installed.
Restarting
didn't help, your virus scan came back with no viruses found, now think
about what programs you may have recently installed. Sometimes a
program (especially an older piece of software) can conflict with
another program. Try uninstalling the last piece of software you
recently installed and see if that corrects the problem.
Do a
little reading.
The next step would be to go to the website of the software company that
you are having a problem with. Almost every software company is
going to have a help section where you can usually type in an error
message and do a search for it. Write down the error message
exactly as it comes up on your computer and then do a search for it.
You will be surprised to find out that you are probably not the only
person in the world to be having this problem with the software program.
Often the software company has already resolved this issue and has an
article explaining how to fix the problem. Many times this will
resolve the problem in question...but not always.
